Last year about this time I posted about Alberta Wildfires 2023. A question posed in that post was whether the number of hectares burned in 2023 was an anomaly or whether it was the start of a trend. Following are the Alberta wildfire statistics for 2024 (up to October 10, 2024.

All Data from Alberta.ca website.

As can be seen, the number of wild fires in Alberta remain on a downward trend and the area burned remains on an upward trend. One can also see that the area burned in 2023 was an anomaly. 2023 was an exceptional year in this regard.

Notwithstanding the myriad causes of forest fires in Canada, there seems to be no discernible trend regarding either the number of overall fires, number of large fires or hectares burned. 2023 does indeed appear as an anomaly. As I suspect did the years 1981, 1989 and 1995.

I look forward to your return to this topic in 2057, when we have more long term data.
